There’s tension in Uyo as Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has reportedly barred Channels Television’s crew from the Government House press centre. This move comes in the wake of the station airing a video clip showing the governor confirming his plans to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
During a State Executive Council meeting on Thursday, Governor Eno didn’t hold back. He attributed his decision to internal crises within the PDP and went on to urge his commissioners and appointees to follow him to the APC—or step down from their roles.
“It’s no longer news that I’m leaving the party,” Eno reportedly said. “If you don’t want to come along, that’s fine, but you can’t stay in my cabinet and play anti-party. It’s either you join me or resign.”
Things escalated after the meeting. According to reports, the governor’s spokesperson, Ekerete Udoh, allegedly warned journalists—especially Channels TV’s Christopher Moffat and cameraman Kufre Ikpe—not to air the governor’s explosive comments.
Sources revealed that Governor Eno was livid about the broadcast and even considered sacking his media aide and disbanding the entire press corps. Moffat, who has covered the Akwa Ibom Government House for Channels TV for over a decade, has now reportedly been barred from the press centre.
Talk about political heat in the Land of Promise!
