In a heartwarming show of appreciation, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has awarded national honors to Nigeria’s Super Falcons for their incredible victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The team, which made history by clinching their 10th WAFCON title with a stunning 3-2 comeback win over Morocco, will now each receive the prestigious national award of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
But that’s not all. In a generous move, President Tinubu also announced that every player and team staff member will be given $100,000 as a reward for their outstanding performance. Adding to the celebration, the Nigerian Governors Forum has gifted each team member an additional ₦10 million.
The victory, sealed in Rabat, Morocco, saw the Falcons come from two goals down to defeat the host nation in front of a roaring home crowd. Esther Okoronkwo, who was named Woman of the Match, sparked the comeback with a goal and an assist, while Jennifer Echegini scored the dramatic winning goal with a spectacular half-volley in the dying minutes.
President Tinubu, in a statement through his spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, described the team’s efforts as “a true reflection of the Nigerian spirit – hardworking, determined, and never giving up.”
This OON award continues a tradition under President Tinubu, who previously honored the Super Eagles with the MON (Member of the Order of the Niger) for finishing second at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The President also emphasized that this recognition is more than just a reward – it’s a message that Nigerian athletes are valued. He recently ensured that all allowances and match bonuses for the Super Falcons were paid in full ahead of the WAFCON final.
The team will soon be officially welcomed at the State House in Abuja, where the honors will be formally presented. President Tinubu expressed his excitement at hosting the team, saying, “Nigeria is proud of these champions. They have lifted the nation’s spirit and shown the world what we’re capable of.”
This celebration of the Super Falcons’ success also signals a broader push for sports development in Nigeria. The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in sports, encouraging private sector involvement and strengthening local leagues.
