If there’s one thing Nigerians never miss, it’s premium global gbas-gbos. So when news broke that U.S. President Donald Trump announced the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and declared America would “temporarily run Venezuela,” Nigerian social media did what it does best: turned it into a national debate, comedy skit, and meme festival — all at once.
Within minutes, timelines were on fire. One camp, clearly running on vibes and frustration, began shouting: “So when is it Nigeria’s turn?” They pointed fingers at rising inflation, insecurity, old U.S. forfeiture claims, and general wahala, suggesting that if America could step into Venezuela, Nigeria might not be too far behind.
On the other side of the digital battlefield were government supporters and self-appointed sovereignty defenders, led loudly by former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad, who wasted no time reminding everyone:
“Nigeria is not Venezuela.”
According to this camp, Nigeria isn’t some walk-in, walk-out country. They highlighted the obvious differences — a large military, strategic U.S. partnerships, no sitting president facing active U.S. drug indictments, and a constitution that doesn’t come with a “Made in Washington” stamp.
Experts also joined the conversation (because Nigerians always summon experts online). They stressed that Venezuela’s situation is unique, rooted in international sanctions, long-standing indictments, and deep diplomatic isolation — not just bad economy and angry citizens tweeting at 2 a.m.
Still, logic didn’t stop the memes.
From photoshopped U.S. Marines at the Third Mainland Bridge to jokes about “temporary administrators for NEPA and fuel prices,” Nigerians ensured the debate stayed entertaining. Inflation may be high, but humor remains fully subsidized.
In the end, the internet jury reached no consensus — just vibes. One thing, however, became crystal clear:
Whether it’s global politics or local suffering, Nigerians will always argue, analyze, laugh, and trend it — simultaneously.
And as Bashir Ahmad said (now officially a catchphrase):
Nigeria is not Venezuela… but Nigerians will still debate it like a WAEC question. 😅🇳🇬
