Prominent Nigerian Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has been deported from Saudi Arabia and barred from performing the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage, despite holding a valid visa for the annual religious rites.
The Kaduna-based cleric confirmed the incident on Monday via his official social media platform, revealing that he was denied entry into the kingdom upon arrival in Medina on Saturday night. Gumi, who was part of a delegation of scholars under the sponsorship of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), had travelled aboard an Umza Air flight alongside other clerics to offer religious guidance during the Hajj season.
“Due to some reasons related to my views on world politics, the authorities in Saudi Arabia do not want me to be present at Hajj even though they have granted me a visa,” Sheikh Gumi wrote.
Despite being cleared for travel, Saudi immigration authorities reportedly stopped him at the airport and refused him entry into the country. Following the incident, the respected scholar returned to Nigeria.
In his statement, Gumi expressed appreciation for the efforts of Nigerian officials, noting that the government had promised to engage with Saudi authorities over the matter. “I am grateful to the authorities in Nigeria who have pledged to engage with the Saudi authorities on this matter,” he added.
While Saudi officials have not released an official explanation for the deportation, many observers believe the move is linked to Sheikh Gumi’s often controversial political and religious views, which may be seen as conflicting with Saudi Arabia’s positions. Gumi is widely known for his outspoken commentary and his role in mediating with armed groups in northern Nigeria.
The incident has sparked debate among followers and religious observers, raising questions about the intersection of faith, politics, and international diplomacy.
