Veteran singer and producer Nico Gravity has claimed that internet fraud poses an existential threat to Afrobeats and Nigerian music in general.
Speaking in a recent episode of the Knowledge Lounge podcast, Gravity claimed that young Nigerians are no longer genuinely interested in making music but illicit wealth and crime.
According to him, a similar lack of interest by young Jamaicans contributed to the decline of reggae music.
“We [Nigerians] are no longer interested in music, we are more interested in crime and fraud. I believe the young Jamaicans lost interest in music. If you google a Jamaican music site right now, you will be seeing the older generations. They are the ones going to shows in Jamaica because they are the ones who are interested in music.
“The young people are the lifeblood of show business. What will kill Afrobeats is Yahoo-yahoo because our young people are not interested in music anymore. They are interested in internet fraud. There was a time when a lot of young people in Ajegunle were all trying to make music. But now, young people are putting all that energy into fraud,” he expressed.
Nico Gravity urged young Nigerians to shun crime and embrace legitimate enterprises in the interest of national development.
